Cafe With No Truffles

Truffles Cafe, Hyderabad

The Basics - Poor service, overpriced, good breakfast, great ambiance, quite, badly maintained, inconsistent with quality, Continental. 800-1000 for two.
The Address - 376, Road no 10, Jubilee Hills. Or call 040-23550105 if you're lost.
The Verdict - Good for breakfast, but not worth the price. If at all, go for the ambiance.

A house turned into a coffee shop, Truffles Cafe is trying a new concept in Hyderabad. It isn't a coffee shop that is synonymous to hookah and nouveau riche spoiled kids but one that spells class and tries to emulate European coffee shops.

The decor is simple and the coffee shop is multi-leveled. Prepare to walk up a good number of stairs if outdoor seating is what you're looking for. The room is brightly lit with yellow as a central theme running through the coffee shop. The bar-like counter is dolled up with wine and liquor bottles giving it a coffee-bar like feel. Don't be fooled, there alcohol prices are pretty penny. They do however offer red and white wine, whiskey, vodka, rum, brandy and cognac.

Circular tables and wooden chairs make up the furniture and old movie posters, cartoons and paintings deck the walls. It has a welcoming feel to it. Truffles Cafe is one of those places where you can easily go alone for a coffee or walk in with your laptop and a book to read. It is quite and has it's occasional visitors streaming in every now and again. The waiters are always busy walking around ensuring that their customers are taken care of but slack off somewhere in between your meal leaving you disappointed. Nevertheless, I've noticed that Tuffles has become more popular with the masses and parking is nuisance now. If not for the valet parking, I'm not so sure I'd go there!

The menu is extensive and boasts of almost everything you can imagine of in the Continental flare. While the food is good Truffles is exorbitantly overpriced for a coffee shop. Yet, what keeps bringing me back is the ambiance. For breakfast, their bacon is crisp and the sausages hot, steaming and soft on the inside. Their Spanish omlette is fluffy, waffles so hard I could barely cut through them and finally, the scrambled eggs were decent. There's your Sunday morning dream!

Their pizzas are thin crust, oven fired and suited to fill one stomach. The vegetarian Italiano pizza for Rs. 250 and the Lamb Bolognese pizza ooze of cheese and the crust is crisp. If the cheese is not enough for you, ask for an add on for Rs. 50. While I did not enjoy the Sea food pizza my friends did.

Their Penne Arrabiata was watery and lacked enough meat and vegetables, the dripping consistency itself putting you off. The penne was under-cooked and distasteful.

They disappointed with the deserts with the Blueberry Cheesecake not tasting but definitely looking like one. Weirdly the Butterscotch cheesecake was in fact, a cheesecake. The Apple pie came warm but the Tiramisu was perfect. It was light and fluffy, leaving a teeny explosion of chocolate, coffee and liquor on your tongue with the very first bite.

Sadly, the cafe is badly maintained despite having toyed with the natural environment to Truffles Cafe's own advantage. Beautiful natural rocks sit against the backdrop contrasted by a badly maintained wall with the paint peeling off. The quality of food is inconsistent and I find myself leaving happily one day while the next, I leave behind no tip at all. It's a risk you will have to take and I'm not sure if I will continue to what with many more cafes springing up around town. Yet, we all go back, perhaps because of the ambiance and the delightful breakfast or maybe even for the "Before I die I would" wall at the entrance.

P.S - There are no truffles on the menu. I looked twice!

What's hot - Pizzas, Spanish omlette.
What's not - Penne Arrabiata
